Grass to Native Garden – Day 3

The title says Day 3, but it’s really been 3 weeks since the last work was done. These things take time.

Actually, before today, Kenny felt that there might be too much pathway and not enough garden, so we revised the plan again:

And we went shopping for native plants. Turns out a lot of nurseries around here sell beautiful plants, but they aren’t always native to Southern California; and I was going even further: native to Burbank. California Native Plant Society explains why it’s important on this page.

So we found a lovely little shop that sells only native stuff, with a location in Glassell Park – Plant Material. They had just about all of the plants I used in my plan. The plants are pretty darn small – we fit them all in our car. But we will enjoy watching them grow – especially the Hollyleaf Cherry tree! Below is a spreadsheet I put together because I am that way, and also the corresponding diagram for each plant’s location:

José’s and crew came this morning to complete the next round of work:

  • Lay weed barriers: fabric under the decompressed granite pathway, and paper under the garden (to encourage healthy soil)
  • Top the garden area with a quite fragrant layer of soil amendment
  • Add the decomposed granite to the pathway and roll it flat

Tomorrow: plant plants and top with mulch!
